The future of WISP's? Share your thoughts

I have been in the WISP industry now for 15 years now, and I’m sure many of you for longer than that. I started at a WISP as a junior help desk and worked my way up to Senior Systems & network Architect. Long story short I started my own WISP in 2017 in a new country and have had healthy growth since in comparison to population density in our coverage areas.

That being said, there is this ever looming threat that fixed wireless services is a dying market. Yes it will always have its place in the world, but FTTx and the likes of Starlink is taking over the market. I started out with a 1Mbps line being my smallest package, 8Mbps is now minimum and we know that doesn’t come close to compete with FTTx.

How many have switch to open access models on fiber networks? has this been successful for you? How has the additional cost of the open access + increase demand for capacity affected your bottom line?

So I just would like to have a open discussion with fellow WISP owners on how you have stayed competitive in the market?

Is the old school approach of a few high sites and multiple sectors with P2P backhaul still your approach or have you changed to a different network topology?

Has any one deployed a more mobile deployment of wireless? For instance using fiber backhaul and multiple smaller towers in a neighborhood with sectors and then maybe using the 5Ghz radios on HAPAC’s to connect to the tower, and the 2.4Ghz for internal? This is a concept I have thought about and was wonder if someone else has done it or even tried it.
