Through Traffic: in need of a spot of help!

Dear Microtikers,

I have a simple question and would be EXTREMELY greatful if you could answer it as soon as you can!

I have a RouterBoard 500 running RouterOS.

At the moment I can connect to the RouterOS using Winbox via the MAC address but not the IP.

This is fresh out of the box and I have done NO configuration yet. I really like the product and want to learn more about it.

I have a Cisco ADSL router running a large network. The Cisco does not operate as a DHCP server.

ALL I WANT TO DO, is put the RouterBoard between the Cisco router and the Windows 2003 server which operates as a DHCP. I just want the traffic to through the RouterOS; that simple. I want to eventually use the User Manager, but my job tomorrow is just to install it on the network, and further configuration can happen later; remotely Can you tell me how to configure it to do this? I also want to access it remotely via Winbox. Which port do I need to open for this.

The ip of the Cisco is: 192.168.0.1
The Ip of the Win2K3: 192.168.0.2

i will be so greteful for any input on this, as I have been messing around with it for hours.

Many thanks!

You cannot use routing in the case of those 2 IPs being on the same subnet. You should change the subnet of the win2003 subnet to be something like 192.168.1.0/24. If the cisco and win2003 box are on the same subnet you dont have a way to get in the middle … unless you bridge them but then you lose a lot of functionality.

Many thanks ‘changeip’. Can you tell me how I assign the 3 ethernet ports a static ip?

Simple: In WinBox click on “IP”, then “Addresses”. Click on the Plus-Sign, type in the ip address you want to add (like “192.168.1.1/24”) and select the respective interface.

But you really need to have different subnets as Sam (changeip) already stated!
