Just i have now one idea came in mind, because i have similar problems with proprioetary OS’es.
Usually it is required to install some linux software, and i feel already installed software is not enough for me, i need some features, which is not included. Sure i cannot get access to Mikrotik /bin/bash by legal way, and other ways is not acceptable for me. And Mikrotik will not agree to give shell and software installation because of many reasons. It begins from their business secrets and proprioetary software, and ends in complicated user support, cause user actions is unpredictable.
It is possible to run some virtual machine, but qemu, vmware have too much performance overhead, and it is not acceptable. vmware also commercial software, which need additional $$$, what is also not acceptable.
Since Mikrotik use linux kernel (sure hardly patched), there is better way to do all things. For example projects: linux-vserver gives even virtual network stack, and customer can do whatever he want with software (install custom quagga, optimised squid, bird, web-server, his own software with his own php-scripts), without ability to touch main system. It is used for VPS, but it is very useful also to have network VPS.
It is sure complicated to implement such technology, but if it will be implemented, it will be amasing to system administrators, who like to do something by their hands, by using known techniques, to write few scripts on C/C++, php, perl etc.
Sure it is useful only on stand-alone PC.
And still big question, that is possible to keep system “embedded” style, and have “support” scripts for vserver. Another thing kernel. As i feel - Mikrotik uses 2.4 kernel, and have strong reasons for that (i think drivers and all software using kernel API).
