Trying to set up a pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) WiFi hotspot...losing my mind (HELP PLEASE)

Sooo here is what I have and what I’m shooting for:

MikroTik SXT 2ND R2 w/ RouterOS 6.27
Level 4 License Upgrade (for SXT above)
Zyxel ADSL Modem
Ethernet on SXT connected to ethernet on DSL modem
Fairpoint ISP

I took the SXT out of the box, upgraded the license to level 4, set it up as “AP” mode in Quickset. I could join the new SSID, and use my ADSL via the MikroTik WiFi. Awesome.

After making sure everything worked, I wanted to set up HotSpot. Apparently the version of RouterOS I was running didn’t support hotspot, so I used Netinstall to install RouterOS 6.27, HotSpot and User Manager. Got it connected in netboot mode and pushed the updates. All went swimmingly.

After the radio restarts w/ 6.27…things just don’t look right. I’ve COMPLETELY lost any DHCP-related entries under “IP” in WinBox. Doing ‘ip’ [ENTER] in terminal works, trying anything like ‘dhcp-client’ or ‘dhcp-server’ yields a syntax/command error.

I reset the device completely (leaving it at 6.27) and have tried the following:

Create a bridge using ethernet and wireless as ports. The bridge shows up, looks good.

Click “HotSpot” and then “Hotspot Setup” and answer all the questions. Point the hotspot at the bridge I created (“bridge-hotspot”) and hit Apply. The radio immediately loses connection to the laptop I’m using to configure it. I see the default “MikroTik” SSID but its only serving up addresses in the 169.254.x.x space. I can’t configure any DHCP address spaces because all of my DHCP options are gone. I even tried to “cheat” and set up the world’s dirtiest hotspot ever, by trying to force the ADSL modem to hand out addresses in its local space (192.168.1.0)…but I can’t set any interface to use a DHCP relay.

I just don’t have any DHCP related options anymore, and I’m at a complete loss as to how to proceed.

I’ve only ever set these up as a WiFi “extender” to link two houses over a 1 mile distance (house 1 had broadband, house 2 couldn’t get it…so used SXTs aimed at each other to bridge house 1’s connection to house 2). I have 0 experience trying to set these up as a PAYGO WiFi hotspot.

Am I just doing it completely wrong, or should I have DHCP config options available to me in 6.27??

If anyone has a link to a good (and preferably ENGLISH, but I can fake it) video or write-up on how to use 6.27 to create a hotspot that serves up outside/public internet via an ADSL modem…I am all ears/eyes.

I’ve been at this for hours, and have smoked all my cigarettes. Somebody please give a relative MikroTik newbie some help. Please?

I’ve had a friend help me set up hotspot, userman, etc…so that part is taken care of.

Issue now is that when people join the SSID, they can just browse right through to websites. They are never ever prompted to sign-in/register/pay.

Local address for the SXT is 192.168.1.88

I can access 192.168.1.88:8888 (webconfig)
I can access 192.168.1.88:8888/userman

As a test, I’ve joined the SSID and browsed directly to 192.168.1.88 as a way to ‘force’ it to present the login page. When I do, I immediately get a “Gateway Error” from the MikroTik box. “Connection refused”

I’ve set up payment gateway in User Manager (PayPal for now, and added PayPal to Walled Garden).

I’ve looked and looked to a solution for the login page not being presented. A few have said it will do that if the router doesn’t have access to the outside. It does, as evidenced by my ability to browse the internet while connected to the MikroTik.

For the record, I’m having the RouterBoard handle the hotspot, userman, and RADIUS. Its connected to the outside world via the LAN port on my ADSL router.
