turn PowerBox Pro into PoE Switch powered by NVR out

hi,

I will purchase the PowerBox Pro and want to power with the PoE out of my NVR to supply power to my PoE camera.

I want to have a clear idea of the config before the device arrives in about 10 days.

Therefore I wanted to transform the router into a Simple PoE switch, is this procedure a good procedure here?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP9AEth07Ag

this procedure outlined here basically resets the config and creates a Bridge with all the interfaces

  1. is this short procedure counseled by you?

  2. so yes this config video seems to create the switch… but i’m not sure how the "actual device gets an IP set to it " for it’s basic activities like updating firmware etc…

  • Plug ethernet cable from NVR in powerbox port 1

Just for the record: you have to connect NVR to port ether1 because it’s the PoE-in port. With the outlined configuration, all the ports are equal regarding ethernet traffic (and hence IP traffic). E.g. DHCP client would be able to obtain IP address regardless of which port was used to connect upstream (towards DHCP server/router).

I need to mount this device about 2.5 mt up on the wall.

is it easy? is there another support i need to purchase to mount it to the wall??

unless I mount some kind of tubular pipe to the wall and then mount the device to the tubular pipe??

There’s the Quick Mount and Quick Mount Pro the PowerBox can attach to.

The quick mount is literally what you described “a tubular pipe” while the Pro has the pipe and an attachment for SXT (and i think it fits the powerbox too)

P.s. i dont know if PoE is enabled by default on the ethernet ports. Might have to enable it under interface/ethernet

Well, it comes with a (metal) DIN rail mount (for the most common 35 mm omega), so the easiest would be to procure a short piece of that or make one from a piece of tin sheet:

and fix the latter to the wall with a couple anchors.
The powerbox is 125 mm wide,. so a 100 mm long or shorter rail would be fine and will not be visible once the device is mounted.
If you have an electrician friend, it can be recovered from any old electrical box, but a set of two or three can be bought new for a few Euros, or less if you are fine with Aliexpress and its times, example:

You may want to add a small piece of plastic or wood between the rail and the wall as a spacer to keep the device a couple centimeters off the wall to allow air flow behind the device and make it easier to snap on and off the rail.

You could get a small piece of pve pipe and drill two holes through it and screw it to the wall, then use the clamps that come with the powerbox to attached to the pipe. That shower handle is expensive

Yep, and besides the (IMHO) ugliness of the solution, from an engineering viewpoint, you are using something designed for 150 Kg load to bear a 0.25 Kg device, with a safety factor of 600! :unamused:

is PoE Enabled? that is the question , so if it is enabled it must be enabled in a way that it will not power the eth port of my PC?

if the PoE is not Enabled what is the correct setting to make sure that it is enabled in a way to make sure that only PoE devices will get the power?

It depends.
How (exactly) are you powering it?
And what (exactly) are you going to power with it?

PoE in is ONLY passive, but can be “low voltage” (aka 24V) or “high voltage” (aka 48V).
PoE out can only be at the SAME voltage as PoE in.
BUT if it is 48V it can be BOTH 802.3af/at or passive, if it is 24V it can be ONLY passive (because the 802.3af/at device on the other end won’t like the low voltage).

In any case Mikrotik devices do a basic check for resistance.

Maybe, or may be not.
That NVR is Poe Out 802.3af/at.
It has to be seen in practice if it can output passive PoE (which is what the Mikrotik requires as PoE in).
In any case it is at 48V.

Provided that it works, what will you power from the powerbox pro? (devices need to be 48V compatible).

This gives you power budget for PowerBox Pro and all connected cameras. PowerBox Pro is specced at 6W max (it might have typical consuption a Watt or two less). So around 20W will remain for powering attached cameras. What is rated power consumption of those?

And don’t forget: long UTP cables (specially low-spec cat-5e) will eat off portion of the budget.
