Hi,
I’d always failed to install version 7.xxx on usb drive. I get error

no issue with version 6.xxxx
Now the problem is u cannot upgrade 6.xx to 7.xxx on x86. It looses licence. Your server goes down for alteast 4 5 days till I get replacement key
You cannot upgrade without licence
Version 7.xx cannot be installed on usb drive.
Look like stuck in blackhole
any advice Mtik people

Search on forum my post or fixed netinstall 6.48.3 version (can be used for install 7.x).
Current netinstall 7x has bug (missing pieces inside the code) for the x86
Another way to install to USB key is to use VM (I use VMware), boot it from Mikrotik install .ISO and have USB flash shared with VM (as USB device). Once files are copied to flash, shut down VM and insert it into target machine. This skips NetInstall (and any of its bugs) completely.
ty,
Couldnt find fixed netinstall 6.48.3.
Any tutorial how to do it with VM ?
The most bizarre thing is Mtik is silent and keeping its eyes closed. I’d already discussed this problem some months back on support email. I’d got 20 x86 server to be upgraded.

Remember that it’s always a bad idea to use files that come from unofficial sources…
As for VM route:
- Create new VM, configuration mostly doesn’t matter, something basic like one core with 128MB ram and set CDROM to load ROS ISO.
- Then make sure you remove the disk drive (if it forced you to create one).
- I usually then boot it into BIOS, there is menu option for that. While not strictly necessary, this gives you time to passthrough the USB to VM before boot.
- Using USB sharing menu forward the USB flash drive (or external HDD/SSD) to the VM.
- Exit BIOS and let it boot, installing ROS. If it fails to find USB, reboot to try again… or try changing USB to 2.0 (EHCI controller) in VM options.
- You can also test boot ROS using VM from USB flash drive after install, to pre-configure the ROS, install license etc. all before putting it into real HW
This should work in VMWare, but also VirtualBox or QEMU… as long as it supports USB device passtrough/sharing.
Hello! I do having the same freaking issue. Tried to install with WM but not booting on my x86 router.
