Unsuccessful upgrade of RB751G-2HnD

Hello, MicroTik fans and gurus.

Brief description of my situation - The RB751G-2HnD router has been used with the original FW and ROS (3.28?) since the purchase in begining of year 2012 . About possibility to renew FW and ROS I found out only when I began to look for possible reasons of the irregular signal crashes and the weak WiFi zone. So I decided to make an ROS&FW upgrade, because in general I do not believe that a device that is so seriously built may “burn out” and especially for home user in such a short period.

Upgrade process was carried out as following:

  1. from MT web the latest FW and ROS for mentioned device was downloaded.
  2. With help of FileZilla, both files were copied to the RB root directory.
  3. Through winbox (2.2.18) I helped RB download new .npk from his own ip addres. (other options I could not find).
  4. Through winbox in terminal further commands were activated: upgrade and reboot.
  5. After reboot and waiting of 30 min, I cannot connect to RB through winbox or filezilla. IP-192.168.88.1 cannot be found on the network, I also tried last winbox but without success.
  6. I also tried to perform a reset, but nothing changed.



    LED actions when power is connected:

    1.PWR- on
  7. as statuss of currently connected RJ-45 ports from upper leds that marked 1-5, only connected port leds blinks in the same time with 6s interval.
  8. upper 5 of 6 leds marked 1-5 blinks in the same time with 6s interval.
  9. ACT- blinks with 6s interval

    WiFi led do not blink.



    Obviously, upgrade was’t succesful or I use wrong connection methon, or I don’t know :frowning:.

    I’m not a networking master and will never be one of them, that is why I want to ask for your help.

    Any ideas?

    Īss situācijas apraksts - Router RB751G-2HnD kopš iegādes 2012.gadā tika lietots ar oriģinālo FW 3.28 un ROS(?), par programmatūras atjaunošanas iespēju uzzināju, kad sāku meklēt iespējamos iemeslus biežajai signāla pārtrūkšanai un vājai WiFi zonai. Izvēlējos veikt upgrade, jo principā neticēju, ka tik nopietni uzbūvēta ierīce var “izbeigties” mājas lietotājam. Process tika veikts sekojoši:
  10. no MT web tika nolādēts jaunākais FW (ar7240_3.41.fwf) un ROS (routeros-mipsbe-6.42.1.npk) minētajai ierīcei.
  11. ar FileZila palīdzību abi faili tika iekopēti RB root.
  12. caur winbox norādīju, lai nolādē jauno ROS no RB IP, fails(.npk) tika atrasts un ielādēts, jo citādi man neizdevās atrast iespēju kā RB pašam atrast uz sevis .npk.
  13. tālāk caur terminal tika dota komanda upgrade un reboot.
  14. pēc reboot winbox nevar pieslēgties RB, nav WiFi, tīklā nevar atrast ip-192.168.88.1, mēģināju arī jaunāku winbox, taču bez izmaiņām.
  15. pēc 30min nolēmu veikt reset, taču nekas nemainījas, RB tīklā joprojām nav atrodams.



    Neesmu tīklošanas meistars un diez vai kādreiz tāds arī būšu, tomēr esmu saskāries ar problēmu un vēlos lūgt jūsu palīdzību. Acīmredzot, upgrade nav izdevies vai arī es nepareiz pieslēdzos. Tātad jautājums- vai tur ko var glābt?

Use actual winbox and connect by mac address over directly connected wire. If no go, use netinstall.

Netinstall worked for me, but I also found reason why there was problem!

With the first attempt to install fresh ROS with Netinstall, it did not worked. Then I found out that ROS older than V5 must be upgraded until last version of V5 and only then you can upgrade it to greater than V5 version! Mark that also netinstall should be used especially for older version, you can’t install old ROS with last netinstall, at least in my case it wasn’t working.

Of course this was mentioned in Wiki: Note: If you are running v5.25 or older, the system will only auto-upgrade to the most recent version of the v5 major version release and not up to v6.20. Manual upgrade is needed in this case.
