Update 2.8 license key to 2.9 (how?)

Hey guys,

I’ve got a little bit of a problem. I’ve installed 2.9.27 onto a HDD that had 2.8.26 with a valid key on it, told it to not keep the old configuration.

After logging in on the console, it says:

ROUTER HAS NEW SOFTWARE KEY

Your router has a valid key, but it will become active only after reboot. Router will automatically reboot in a day.

/sys reboot doesn’t fix it

and /sys lic update-key and /sys lic new-upgrade-key both tell me:
“Failed to set new key (invalid key (6))”

I didn’t see any mention of this error message here:
http://www.mikrotik.com/docs/ros/2.9/system/license
And I can’t seem to upgrade this key to 2.9 thru the MikroTik website.

Any Ideas?

I just tried it in WinBox; the only difference is when I try “Update Key”, it tells me “Could not change the key - invalid key”.

WinBox does say it’ll expire in 2d 22:38:18.

Oops, hang on a second…

ERROR: Key for specified software ID is expired. You can purchase new key at > http://www.mikrotik.com > website! - you may not update an expired key to the version 2.9, you must purchase a new one

Heh, that did it! I didn’t think to purchase it as a new key, like you would with a new install.
