Hello, I would like to upgrade a user’s licence from 3.30 to 4.7
do I need to purchase a new licence and if so can the licence be purchased before the upgrade is made

just login to the router via WinBox, go to System → License and press Update License. it will ask you for reboot, and after that it will show SoftwareID only in XXXX-XXXX format (8 chars)

If the license is Level 3 upgradable to v3, you will need to purchase a new license.
With v4.3+ the “superchannel” is included with the default license.
Last time I checked the Level4 Lic was 45 bucks. Well spent in my opinion.
AFAIR, if the license is upgradable to v3, then after license update it will be upgradeable to v4
