Upgrade procedure 2.9.12?

I would like to double check the upgrade procedure for this old router running MikroTik version 2.9.12:

[admin@client] > /system license pr
software-id: “3XXX-3XX”
upgradable-until: apr/01/2007
nlevel: 4

Last time I did the upgrade something went wrong and the date did not forward. What is the correct procedure?

  1. First upgrade to 2.9.51
  2. Buy new license
  3. Upgrade to 3.30
  4. Upgrade to 4.x
  5. Upgrade to 5.x

or

  1. Buy new license
  2. Upgrade to 2.9.51.
  3. Upgrade to 3.30
  4. Upgrade to 4.x
  5. Upgrade to 5.x

According to recent posts by normis (works for Mikrotik) you should be able to just NetInstall 5.1.

1.netinstall 2.9.51
2.upgrade to 3.30
3. upgrade license via winbox (system ->license)
4.upgrade to 4 and to 5
