Upgrade router from v5.11 to v6.32.4

Hello. I own a RB751G-2Hnd

Since it’s v5.11 there’s no easy “download & upgrade” button.
How can I upgrade to v6.32.4 or newer?

Would it be worth it to replace the RB751G-2Hnd for a RB951G-2HnD ?

If so can I restore a backup from the RB751G-2Hnd v5.11 to the newer RB951G-2Hnd v6.32.4?

Thank you

Hello,

You can download your firmware image from here : http://www.mikrotik.com/download

Then, just drop the file into your router and reboot it. Do not forget to upgrade routerboard too.

The difference between RB951G-2HnD & RB751G-2HnD is CPU and memory (in large)

Before restore your backup from RB751G-2HnD to RB951G-2HnD, upgrade the firmware to the same version.

Yes, you want to restore configurations onto the same version, and then upgrade, especially between versions 5 and 6 because there were many changes made in the way things are configured. (e.g. simple queues) - the upgrade process should be able to translate these older configurations into the current version, but if you try to import the configuration of the older version directly onto a device running v6.32.4, the newer firmware won’t accept many of the older commands.

If you want to upgrade the hardware to a 951, then the best thing would be to first upgrade the 751 to 6.32.4 and then export the resulting configuration from the 751 and import it onto the new 951 running v6.32.4

Basically - change versions or change hardware - never change both at the same time.

Thank you for the info. Much appreciated.

What do you mean by “Do not forget to upgrade routerboard too.” ??

When you update the firmware, you have to check if there is a new routerboard. You can see it at /system routerboard

Oh! ok sorry I didn’t even know that was there.
So should I do the routerboard firmware upgrade first or the RouterOS upgrade?

Do ros update and then the firmware update as the firmware is part of the ros, you cannot get it before newer ros is installed.

Thank you for the information. Much appreciated. I can now upgrade with confidence
