Upgrade/Update options?

Hi,

I trying to upgrade/update a router PC that is running MikroTik Router OS v2.8.18 that is “Upgradeable till December/01/2005” with a level 5 license.

(I have been all over the main website, the wiki, even searching on the forums and I’m not quite sure how to proceed.)

What are my upgrade options?

I’m a little confused on the update procedures and whether they only apply to “Router Boards” or to PC’s as well.

Do I need to:

Buy a new license, or will my existing key work and/or do I need to install the update via Netinstall, and not via ftp or winbox?

If I go the Netinstall route, do I need to have a serial cable (since I am doing it on a PC)?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

See http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/All_about_licenses#Upgrading for more information.

If you have access for the router (keyboard/monitor), then serial cable is not required.
Mainboard should support boot from Ethernet to run netinstall, or you will need to create boot diskete.
Netinstall is the last method, that might help you to upgrade the particular router (as used license is old).
If it will not help, you will have to purchase new license.

So are you saying that:

No you do not need a serial cable (because I have access to keyboard/monitor).

If the router doesn’t support boot from Ethernet then you will need to make a boot diskette.

The only way for me to update without paying for a new license is to use Netinstall.

And if Netinstall doesn’t work for me than I need to buy a new license. (because normally I wouldn’t be able to upgrade anyway)

Is that correct?

Thanks for your reply!

Yes, you are correct.
