Upgrading 900MHz

Hello all. I’m working for a FTTH ISP who also has wireless customers in central Illinois. The previous owners neglec ted all the equipment for 10 years so we are trying to upgrade the FTTH and wireless at the same time. Currently we have Canopy 900, 5.7 and Waverider 900 systems in service but we are looking for a cost effective system that we can easily migrate customers over to so we can improve their service. I was looking at the Metal 9HPn but I’m pretty new to this and I had a few questions.

  • Does this unit function as an access point and subscriber module?
  • Are there particular antennas for these units? We have a selection of Yagi antennas on hand that would be great to still be useful.
  • Does anyone have user experience with these? Reliability, speed, durability.

I’m pretty green with this stuff so if anyone has some reading to help understand the wireless stuff a bit more that would be awesome. Thanks for the help guys.

What is a subscriber module?

Any Mikrotik which has WiFi on board, can act as an AP.

Antenna’s: You should hire a wireless engineer (preferably who had experience in rolling out macro or indoor networks). Antenna type and model / make is dependant on the goals you want to achieve. There are no specific antenna’s only for Miktorik.

With the only exception that you need at least L4 license for AP, while there’s plenty of CPE devices which are shipped with L3 license. The Metal 9HPn has L4 license (i.e. supports AP mode).

Yes, you are correct. I forgot about the L4 license.
