Upgrading from 5.26 to 6.30.2 ?

Can this upgrade be safely performed in one step? If intermediate steps are advised, which updates should be applied before applying 6.30.2?

My config is a relatively simple P-to-P wireless bridge running on an a pair of RB411GL devices.

Can the AP and CPE devices be upgraded independently of each other and still function, or do I need to upgrade both at the same time?

I suppose that is another way of asking whether an RB411GL running 5.26 will be able to communicate with an RB411GL running 6.30.2?

Thanks!

This is possible.
The best solution: on all your routerboardq the same ROS.
Also don’t forget upgrade the bios (system-router board)

Will the client bridge work well enough using the old firmware/bios to allow me to connect remotely and perform the bios update… or will I need to be on site to do this?

From past experience I know this needs to be a second step and isn’t automatically updated when the routerboard reboots.

I am imagining that I would follow the following steps;

  1. Update the CPE at remote site to 6.30.2 by copying routeros-mipsbe-6.30.2.npk, and rebooting routerboard

  2. Update the AP to 6.30.2 by copying routeros-mipsbe-6.30.2.npk, and rebooting routerboard

  3. Reconnect to the AP and update the firmware/bios to current version, and reboot again.

  4. Reconnect to the CPE at remote site via bridge, and update the firmware/bios to current version, and reboot.

  5. Verify that bridge is fully operational, and save new backups of the config files for both AP and CPE

  6. Relax and have a beer!

Have I missed anything ???

No, this is correct

If there is no real reason for upgrade, don’t do it. Be glad it is working now without any problems…

Thanks for your advice.

I understand your reasons for your warning, but it doesn’t really answer the question.

Although I am not especially interested in advanced new features, I am interested in eliminating vulnerabilities and possible performance or stability improvements that may result from an upgrade.

Then you are free to upgrade as you described.

The upgrade process went very smoothly!

Too early to comment on whether the upgraded version has resulted in any differences in performance or stability of the wireless bridge.
