USB Cellar Modem for hap ax3 - second ISP as backup or aggregation link

Hi all,
I am new to Mikrotik.
Just order the hap ax3, but wanted to connect to it additional 4G/LTE modem as a backup line or link for aggregation (if possible).
My mobile internet operator provides those cellar modems.

  • HUAWEI 4G WIRELESS ROUTER E5785-330 LTE
  • ZTE 4G WIRELESS ROUTER MF927U LTE
  • ALCATEL 4G LTE USB MODEM IK41VE1
  • Huawei E3372H
  • Huawei E2B3
  • HUAWEI E5832
  • ALCATEL X060S
  • ALCATEL X22
  • Huawei E173

I was wondering whether it will be able to connect to hap 3ax and. be able to use any of them directly via the USB.
If yes, which one would be the best one?
If none of them are compatible would you suggest any alternative solutions?
I will be using it in the city in area with good signal, so I don’t think will need special antennas or devices to plug in the router to achieve this.(correct me if I am wrong)

Side note: I was thinking initially to get router with build in cellar modem (e.g. Chateau LTE6), but choose the hap ax3 due to the USB 3 and 1GB of RAM as I want to use it also for containers. I hope that it was not a wrong decision.

I use a Huawei E3372H-320 with my CCR1036 for exactly this purpose (backup). Needs ROS7 to work.

Thank you for your response.

I think the ax3 is a fine an approach for LTE. Even in the Chateau LTE6, it’s connected via USB - main difference is the antennas & being one unit. But an external hotspot can be more easily “upgraded” if your cell network/carrier changes.

Most of these hotspots should work if they support connecting to Windows via USB as Mikrotik uses the same protocol as Windows to connect to the modem (in V7 RouterOS)

You have made an excellent choice for your first MT product.
Its the best bang in the lineup IMHO. The wifi works well for a few and give many other fits of despair but with each successive firmware update ( several per year ) it seems to be improving and hopefully in the near future will be more stable.

As per the product page " And we’ve added a speedy USB 3 port for all your storage purposes or an additional LTE modem. "
Certainly meets your needs and is well positioned for any ISP up to 1.5 gig on the WAN side.

In terms of modems, you raise an excellent point! I am not aware of any list MT has published where they have tested and confirm specific LTE modems work with their USB connection.
They should!!
In the meantime, you have one positive referral and would stick with that, unless someone else has other experiences.

Suggest possibly asking to rent or 'try out" a modem to confirm it works etc…

See here: https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ROS/Peripherals

It’s not exact, since there can many subtypes/varients of the ones listed that may also work. In some case, you may have select “USB for data” someplace in the device, otherwise it will just use the Mikrotik to charge itself.

Personally, I’d be looking for one that supported external antennas if possible as that give you option to improve the speeds with some cheap antennas.

Thank you, guys for your responses.
I feel better now with my choice:)
