Using a hAP ac lite as an access point

I need advice on how to configure the hAP lite as a secondary access point.

I have a main router (ASUS RT-AC87U) which provides a primary and guest WLAN and wired ethernet via various switches etc. But there are parts of the house where the wireless signal doesn’t reach. I have an ethernet cable running to a suitable location for a secondary access point, and I’ve actually been using a Netgear WN604 AP box which kind of works, but it’s horribly flaky and causes lots of problems, and besides I want to add 5G wireless. So I bought a hAP ac lite to replace the Netgear.

If I understand it right, what I need to do is turn off NAT and DHCP, disable the bridge, and give the hAP a static IP address for its incoming connection from the main router. I will configure the hAP to broadcast the same SSIDs, with the same WPA2 passphrases as the main router. Is there anything else I will need to do?

Thanks for helping!

What I would do:

1.- Upgrade to latest bugfix
2.- Reset to no defaults
3.- Create a bridge. Add all interfaces (wired and wireless) to the bridge.
4.- Configure wireless interfaces: same SSID, security (WPA2) and passphrase as you pointed.

Done. As long as you plug one ether from the hap ac lite to the lan ports of the Asus, everything will be managed (DHCP, etc) by the Asus, hap ac lite becoming a “wired/wireless switch”.

You can manage the hap ac lite via the Neighbors tab in winbox (Mac-winbox).

If you want the hap ac lite to have an IP to be reachable in L3: add a DHCP Client on the bridge, default settings are fine.

That’s all required.

Many thanks for this. I have it all working now, though it took a bit more research to understand how to configure the wireless side of things. It’s all so easy when you understand how!
