Using different routers for download and streaming.

I’m using a routerboard RB951 that merges two routers into one. the wan is connected to another router board per the advice of my network consultant.
Both routers have the same bandwidth and the same ISP.
What I want to do is have the router board use one router for streaming and one for download. I have about 100 clients but only 35 are online at any given time. but they feel the connection to be too slow. please help.

If you can tell us how to determine if something is downloading or streaming, we can probably help you

So… you have 1 ISP, 2 connections, and 100 clients.

How are you distributing bandwidth between those 2 connections now? What’s the purpose of putting a 2nd router on one of them?

IMO, you would be best served by doing 3 things:

  1. Eliminate the 2nd router (bring both connections into a single router)
  2. Implement PCQ for your clients (all clients get an equal share of bandwidth at all times)
  3. Implement PCC for your upstream connections.

If you’re able to do so, consolidate your connections and skip the PCC.

If you have to use multiple connections, and they are more than about 15-20Mbit/s each, you would likely see a huge performance improvement by switching out to a router with 3+ ports on the CPU (as opposed to moving through a switch chip). The RB1100 is a very nice solution at $350.

I have found some important routers for downloading and streaming like Synology DS-212j D-Link DL-604. These are perfect for downloading and streaming
