Hello!
I’m using Mikrotik RBUIAS-2HnD in my home, and I wanted to use spare 32GB USB Flash drive as a simple drag-n-drop SMB shared drive to copy small files to/from office and share with other home computers (yes, I’m aware that speed for Mikrotik SMB drives is only around 4MB/sec, and I should get cheap NAS for this, but even this small speed is enough for my intended purpose).
Anyhow - I followed same instructions as in multiple different websites across the world - plugged in flash drive using OTG cable, formatted it to FAT32 by using Winbox, and made guest-accessible shared folder and accessed it via Windows Explorer. Tried to copy some photos to and from drive - no problem whatsoever, so far so good.
What I tried next was to copy some larger files - CD images and videos to newly created drive, and here comes the problems -
- ***** When trying to copy over to SMB files over few MB in size, it takes very long on the “Calculating remaining time” dialog on windows explorer - it just stands there for about 30 seconds, and then copies as normal. It reads back ok as well, just this very annoying delay at the beginning.
mikrotik_smb_slow.jpg - ***** From time to time it fails to start copying file at all, and shows “Unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. 0x8007003B”. Strangest part is that when I cancel the copying error dialog and go to Files section in the winbox, I can see that the file is actually still being copied to SMB drive (it size grows as I observe).

Is there any explenation for this inconsistent and unstable behaviour of SMB on Mikrotik devices? I mean - is it really so hard to build-in decent USB controller for disk drives and make stable SMB server to access it - after all, almost all mid-level home routers these days provides decent basic NAS functionality, and it hurts to see that Mikrotik lags behind so much in these soho features that would allow them to be used in more small office and home enviroments.
