using mikrotik to monitor data usage

We are getting more and more cases of clients querying their data usage on our wireless network.
Since most of these clients have more than one device (and more than one person) using the connection it’s not really feasible to use some software on the devices themselves. Also unfortunately there is no conformity of client side equipment.

Since all have some CPE making a PPP connection to the high site and then use a wireless router for wireless access inside the building, I’m wondering if it would be possible to use some mikrotik device between the CPE and wireless router to monitor the data usage to specific devices and probably even get a more specific idea about what the data was used for.

Problem is my networking knowledge is still very basic and I have no idea on how to proceed! Maybe this is a stupid idea and someone can suggest a better way of doing this?

I’m not quite sure what your specific scenario is, but many WISPs insist that the customer uses their MikroTik wireless router. Some even go so far as to call it a CPE or a modem of some sort. Having in an inexpensive RouterBoard there can be very advantageous. I’m assuming from what you wrote that the CPE is not a MikroTik device… that is another option. Use a Mikrotik wireless device as a CPE and you will have far more options than you will with any other vendor’s equipment.
