using netinstall

Hello ppl,
Seems I’ve got a bit of a problem, I’ve got a 532A board that won’t boot the OS, so, upon recommendation, I reformated the nand and dl’d netinstall from the support page. I’ve installed it on my laptop (Vista :frowning: ) then dl’d the 3.10 (all pkgs.) file to the laptop.I assigned the ethernet IP in my laptop. Then, tried firing up netinstall following the howto on mikrotik website, assigned the IP for the bootp client thru netinstall gui. I have serial communication to the 532a board via the same laptop to monitor progress. My laptop also has auto mdx so no switch or hub is needed.

These are my observations:

  1. Upon initiating netinstall, the only device shown in the main window is my D: drive. No mikrotik device is shown.
  2. Get an error message stating:
recvfrom failed: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
    (10054)
3.The packages window in netinstall show all the package icons as small bags, not the checkable boxes as shown in the howto.
  3. All control buttons in the netinstall gui except Make Floppy, Net booting, Browse and Help are greyed out.

The serial communictions window (Hyperterminal) says the 532a is getting an assigned IP and resolved mac address, then a loooong series of asterisks marks followed by a reboot, then the whole process repeats itself.

Many say that this is an easy procedure, well let me be the master idiot to test idiot proof mechanisms because I WILL find a way to botch it up.

What am I doing wrong? :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

The cure all is not to use vista…netinstall evidently doesn’t play nice with it. Used another PC with XP …RB532a up and running!

We have used Netinstall with Vista. The problem could be it’s firewall. If it’s off, it works ok

also got it working with vista…net goblins…

In Netisntall you need to put temporary IP address to give out device while installing.

This error comes up when that address is already in use in the network - i had it when is accidentally specified there IP that was on the PC itself.

Sorry to open this old thread again but even in the most recent version it’s absolutely NOT clear that you need to fill in an empty IP the netbooting/etherbooting device can take. Also the current Wiki article isn’t clear about this either.

Change the lines in the software please. “Client IP address” is just too confusing. Make it something like “Specify free IP in current subnet for Netbooting routerboard” and it’ll be a lot more clear for everyone.

Other then that it worked just fine on Windows 10.

I had to disable my firewall for a few minutes to get netinstall to work.
