V6.2 Winbox from cant drag and drop files

winbox from: http://ipaddres/winbox/winbox.exe - CAN’T drag and drop files
winbox from: mikrotik.com - I can drag and drop files

Is it intended, or bug?

Windows 8

when you launch the winbox launcher you can see its version. if it is the same, Windows is messing with you.

make sure you’re ‘dropping’ onto the winbox window and not say the firewall sub-window. The latter must have some other function for drag n drop.

OK, one of them ran in XP compatibility mode.

Now I’m just curious:
winbox from: http://ipaddres/winbox/winbox.exe
winbox from: mikrotik.com
Different sizes, same versions, why?

winbox from router will always be newer. I can’t comment on the size, maybe newer file was simply better compressed, but as features didn’t change, version number stayed the same

When I first installed Winbox v3.4 I encountered the same problem. I ended up renaming the program winbox-cant-drag-and-drop.exe and went back to using an older version. At some point, I noticed that drag and drop started working again in the newer Winbox, so I went back to using that.

Last night, while doing some other housekeeping, I came across the renamed file and decided I didn’t need the “cant-drag-and-drop” note anymore so I renamed it back to winbox.exe. Imagine my surprise this morning when drag and drop stopped working again. I renamed the file to winbox-change-name.exe and voila, drag and drop works again.

Yeah, I know it sounds like voodoo, but what have you got to lose?

Also, there is a clever workaround I saw on YouTube: in Windows, choose the files you want to upload and type command-C. Then in the Files window in Winbox, click the Paste icon (brown clipboard).

I’m sorry, but the voodoo is just getting deeper.

I updated Winbox yesterday. When Windows Firewall complained about it at first launch, I told it to run on all types of network (I’m pretty confident I did).

Drag-and-drop into the router stopped working.

I made sure to set it as “run as administrator for all users.” No difference.

Then I reviewed this chain, and renamed the exe to windows-fix-drag-and-drop.exe . I handled the new Firewall warning. Drag and drop still didn’t work.

After having to use this WInbox on a half dozen routers in the space of 24 hours with this same failure, today I spent a little more time on the problem. Nothing worked, until I renamed the file to winbox-change-name.exe . IMMEDIATELY, drag and drop worked again (for the first time in this new version).

As a test, I added a letter to the name to trigger the Firewall warning again, and “forgot” to check the box allowing its use on local networks (because maybe I bobbled that earlier?) But that didn’t affect drag-and-drop, which still worked.

I changed the name back to winbox-fix-drag-and-drop.exe, handled the Firewall dialog box again … and drag-and-drop still worked.

There’s some serious voodoo going on here, and it smells like unset-variable type of voodoo.

somewhere in your OS, there are black and whitelist rules set on specific filenames, it seems. Try another PC to verify

No that’s demonstrably not the case. As the steps showed, once the drag-and-drop prohibition is broken, I can sometimes return the filename to a value that didn’t work previously, and it will work now. Except for the value winbox.exe, which seems to absolutely fail every time.

I know this sounds like tinfoil-hat country, but I guarantee you it is the truth. I just opened our shop router with my renamed production Winbox, dragged in a file, deleted it and closed Winbox; renamed the winbox program to winbox.exe; opened the same router and got the “no” symbol trying to drag the same file in; closed Winbox; renamed it to winbox-fix-drag-and-drop.exe; opened the same router and dragged the same file in successfully.

I have seen this behavior in both Windows 7 and Windows 10. I don’t know anyplace in Windows that could exercise that sort of discretionary control even if I wanted to. And other people are reporting this problem from time to time over the years, as evidenced by a forum search.

Now you can download file by right clicking on in and also upload files with upload button. This should be preferred method when drag and drop does not work.
