Vertical / Horizontal Connectors

So… I got this UBNT sector antenna that I’ve been testing with for a few days now. I noticed that the sector antenna has a “V” and “H” marking on the antenna connection points. My Mikrotik Netmetal 5 which I connect to this antenna does not have a V/H marking on it; it instead has a chain0 and chain1 marking.

I found that when I swap the connections there is a significant difference in performance. This tells me that each of the two chains on the radio are dedicated to either Vertical or Horizontal polarization.

My questions are:

  1. Where in the configuration do I find/set which chain is vertical or horizontal polarization?
  2. How do I know which antenna connector point is vertical and which is horizontal on my Mikrotik mANT 30 antenna (it has no markings).

There is no diference wich one is H or V because the radio doesn’t care, you can put two vertical pol. antennas and the radio will not “know”. Diferent polarisations are only implemented in the antennas.

Why would UBNT feel the need to put H/V markings on their antenna?

Why they didn’t put HV on the RocketM ?
As I said, it’s an antenna feature not radio.

    Connect vertical polarization (arrow V) to CH0, horizontal polarization (arrow H) to CH1 - see Fig. 5. :wink:

Always try to match the polarization on a radio ap’s chains with that of the cpe or receiving radio. This is not only good practice but should help with performance and connection strength as well. Good luck!

Why in this manual is ch0 - vertical?

Other MT products - SXT, Sextant have chain0 - horizontal

Because a simple typo in the manual could result in signal issues (not sure it’s the case here ) , I always test in single polarity first and
have encountered antennas which had their polarities switched, then enable both polarities.

V/H - antena polarization, not chains

Exactly! Didn’t we had big discussions in this forum about the first line of SXT’s that when they were fit in old style, single-chain V-pol omni antenna networks we had to hang them on their sides. Water ingress, odd fitting etc.
So from these days indeed Vertical was chain 1. Why they now use chain ‘0’ in a manual is a sign they themselves are not always knowing what they are doing…

But anyway, as long as you make sure both ends of the link are the same you should be fine.

If you use both chains and connect them to one wireless card there is no difference to which polarization you connect each chain as the wireless chip will recognize both signals without any problems.

The RB912UAG-2HPnD has two connectors : j500 y j502.
I don’t know which one is for the horizontal polarization or the vertical polarization. Someone could help me?

Polarization happens in the antenna, not in the router. So it doesn’t mattter.
