virtualbox config for bw test setup

Hi,

I’ve been having this issue where eth ports fail to do GB speeds and I’m setting up a test environment. I have a bw test tick set up and the tick I want to test, but then I have to have a GB capable device plug into eth ports to run the test.

The two tics are connected through a GB switch and get 800Mb+ when testing their sfp connection.

The plan: use macbook pro running routerOS vm in virtualbox to connect to speedtest server over eth through the tick port we are testing.

The obstacles:

1 No matter how I try to config virtualbox, I can’t get winbox/browser/ssh to get me in.

2 From command line, I am not getting the option to add dhcp-client to any ether interfaces to see if I could bridge through to the dhcp server (as in, ip dhcp- goes red and does not autocomplete, nor do I see it listed in any ? listings)

3 all of the help articles I’m finding are for different versions of software and nothing they suggest works

4 when I log into default os in virtualbox interface, I can log in with admin/blank but there are no ip’s assigned, I had thought by default it would have a 192.168.88.1?

5 I tried bridged with a static ip on same subnet, I tried host only just to see if i could connect, I tried port forwards on 22/80 with 192. and 10.

What am I missing about virtualbox bridged config? What am I missing about the default vm os? Why no dhcp-client option?

How can I get to this thing over winbox or web?

Is there any other way to run a bw test over eth without having a routerOS device originating the test, ie a standalone program that could run the test to the bw-server?

tia for any light that can be shed, thx

What if I rephrased this question:

“How would you test gigabit ethernet port speeds on a tik in a lab environment?”
