hi, i’m considering on buying a new PC that support virtualization, and going to install mikrotik under windows VMWare, but before that, i need to know how is mikrotik License gonna work? since the harddrive under vmware is actually emulated disk, am i correct?
i also have a x86 RouterOS already running in *plain mode(without VM), can i use this harddrive for RouterOS inside VM and use the key that is already installed on this drive? so i don’t have to buy new license.
only using raw device mapping (RDM), I think
so, it’s very possible?
i’m going to use VirtualBox, hope that works
ok. tested. HDD is fully detected. BUT the key, changes… so, is this mean, i have to buy another license for the same HDD? that is not yet broken
well, at least in ESXi, there are virtual and physical RDMs…

you’re saying using VMWare ESXi, will make the key stay as it is?
I accidently activated another ESXi installation, now I have more VMware installations that I’ll ever need. If you want this one, post your mail address, and I will respond with a download link.
nah
i’ve got it myself now, gonna test it tomorrow, just hope it won’t break my partition
Okey, any other? It’s a L6 license.

what License? you’re giving away?
Last chance! I have a feeling that you don’t know the power of VMware ESXi. ![]()
MikroTik RouterOS 4.x L6 is activated in VMware ESXi (can be used in any VMware system). It’s possible to move/copy it from one computer to another one, I did it many times in the past.
VMDirectPath in VMware ESXi also allows guest operating systems to directly access an I/O device, bypassing the virtualization layer (your hardware must support Intel Virtualization Technology). ESXi also supports virtual switches with VLAN / Bonding / Teaming / Link Aggregation. You can build a complex virtual network inside ESXi, that means less physical hardware needs to be purchased and maintained, you spend less on power and cooling, and you free up valuable data center space.
VMware ESXi is free and can be downloade on their homepage.

well, please
nothing against you from sharing it, thanks
What do you think MikroTik will say if I share it so anybody can download it? I don’t think they will like it. ![]()

You mis-spelt that. Should have said ‘first mail will first be severed’, as it should be cos it was mine !
Yep. Folks it is true. He’s giving away a Free Licence.
Don’t email for it if you can’t use it, or Spain will win the World Cup.
