Voip over OpenVPN !

Hello,

Does OpenVPN ( Encryption 1024 or 2048 ) affect voip connection when this connection is over vpn ? As we know that voip connection is very delicate, does the encryption process of packages affect the voice with interupts etc etc ?

Thank you !

Depends on the total latency and jitter.
Typical “Telco Quality” voice will tolerate up to 120ms of total latency, including jitter.

If both ends of the link have hardware AES acceleration, and the link is less than 50ms to start with,
then most VoIP codecs will be just fine.

Hello,

First, thanks for response. The action plan is this: I will connect two ( RouterBoard’s ) using VPN ( OpenVPN ) with server-client architecture. This connections is between two different states. I think that as encryption protocol I will use AES-256, and I am not sure that will work fine if encryption of packages it’s not so fast. Anyway if you have a similar experince with VOIP over VPN, what kind of VPN connection you suggest for best voip quality, without latency and jitters ?

Best regards,

My home office is connected to work via SSTP (mikrotik to mikrotik). I have 3 sites, all in the same state. We use ShoreTel and a Broadcom HD voice codec. At home I have the local cable company running 100/5 with an average of 20ms. The sites have fiber at 150/150 with 5ms. That’s 25ms right there. With the SSTP on top of it, it puts me at about 35ms with plenty of room for jitter. We are using CCR1009’s at the sites. And I have a CCR1016 at home.

We use RB2011, RB951G & CRS125 in our Offices. All Offices are connected to simple DSL 16000 uplinks.
We have OpenVPN tunnels to our hosting colocation with a central asterisk server.
There is no problem with voip and we use the HD Codec (G722).
We implemented some qos rules, so that heavy downloads won’t affect the voip data.

In older setups we have RB750G and slower DSL 6000 uplinks, but this works too.
