VOIP QOS and Traffic Shaper

Hello all

I have been searching for awhile now on the forum trying to find just the right combination of exactly what I am looking to do, but haven’t, so here’s my post:

We sell a hosted PBX voip platform that is very much dependent on QOS on the routers. We have found other vendors that offer what we are describing below, and I know it must be capable of doing on a Mikrotik. I have just banged my head so much trying to get this to work.

I am looking for a queue that will do the following:

–Have one queue that is for voip traffic, and I’m just marking packets/connections based on the IP address of an IP phone to simplify things. This queue is to have a CIR of 512k up and down on speeds, just to be safe there is plenty of bandwidth for the call. This has a priority of 1

–The other queue is for default traffic, again marking packets/connections of all ‘other’ traffic. This queue needs to have a CIR 1mb speeds up and down, and a maximum rate of 1.5M up and down, when there is no traffic coming from the voip queue above. This has a priority of 8

the problem I am running into is when I create my queue trees, along with a parent queue (with priority of 8), and I’m using SFQ (at least that’s the queue type I’ve read that is supposed to be used with voip services for best results), if no one is on the phone, I get the full 1.5mb x 1.5mb. However, when someone is on the phone, and I verify that the voip queue is going up with the counters and they are using 90-100k of speed, when I do a bandwidth test again from my pc, I’m still getting the full 1.5mb upload and download.

It seams taht the queues are just not working like they should.

I would really like to have a queue that does the following:

As soon as someone picks up a phone and dials, and there are packets tramsmitting from that IP phone, immediately drop all other data connections to 512k x 512k speeds.

This is done on a number of other products we have used in the past, and we are just trying to get this to work on the mikrotik platform to really start pushing these things to our clients.

Maybe I have the wrong queue type, or maybe I should just be using simple queues…any thoughts?

I didn’t post any configs but I can if needed.

Thanks in advance for any help

What you want can be done, but there is a pretty big learning curve. Maybe hire a consultant, at least then you will get guaranteed results (if not, you don’t pay them:) )

Any suggestions on a consultant?

Once they complete it, do you think it would be something i could mimic/copy to our other mikrotik’s currently in service?

Thanks

I couldn’t recommend one, but i’m sure someone here could. As for mimilking it on other boards, yes you’d be able to do that, as all settings are out in the open. It would just be a case of changing the necessary addresses etc.

really a consultant? I am sure we can figure this out in the forums.

when there is no traffic coming from the voip queue above then what is it?

I think I can help if I can get the answer to this question. Original poster: can you answer this?
