VPN connection drops

Hello,

We have Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+. Sometimes vpn connections drop and here is log:

user logged in from xxx.xxx.x.xxx via winbox
terminating…-peer is not responding.
user logged out.

What can cause this happen? Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Most probably a connection issue between the vpn server and die client device.

If its clients connecting over a cellular network there is not much you can do

But if they are on your network most probably a port flap or wireless link disconnecting

Thanks for your reply. We use fiber optic internet at our homes. But when we connect via vpn to our head office, sometimes vpn connection terminates and it becomes annoying.

Fiber optics to your home does not guarantee that packets cannot get dropped somewhere between your home and your office. A pptp normaly doesn’t break on a single lost packet, so maybe some device on the path is restarting or something else interrupts the path for long enough that the pptp’s timers expire.

Then it means the problem is not related to our Mikrotik at our head office. Something happens between office and home, right?

Pick the best vpn and make sure it comes at cheap price and offers the setup guide.

emma, next time this happens (ie peer failed to reply , and vpn wont connect), try this:

on the vpn CLIENT side, go to ip , firewall, connections (big list of all connections).

find the connection for your VPN servers’s public IP (in the list above), and click REMOVE (the red “-” button)

then see if the VPN-client connection, connections then (it should just work/connect , as the vpn clicnet keeps retrying when the connection is down)
