VPN (L2TP/IPsec) connection connected, but no internet access

Hello everyone !

I have a noob question regarding our company VPN connection. We are currently using a MikroTik RB2011UiAS-2HnD router, running 6.46.4. The problem is that when i connect to the VPN from home, the Internet on my computer stops working (no e-mails comming trough, no nothing). I’ve asked the guys that set up the router if there is any possibility to have VPN and Internet connected at the same time, but i think they are trying to sell us Fortigate and said that MikroTik is not capable of tunnel splitting. Is there anything i can do to enable VPN and internet at the same time ? Untill now it was ok the way it worked, but now with this Covid 19 shit going on, we have the possibility to work from home, and we need to use e-mails and other programs that require VPN at the same time. Thank you !

You can split trafic at your client PC.
What operating system are you using?

Some computers run Windows 7 and others Windows 10

Open Powershell window with administrator rights and run:

Get-VpnConnection -Name “vpn name”
You will see that SplitTunneling is “False”

Set SplitTunneling:

Set-VpnConnection -Name “vpn name” -SplitTunneling $True

where vpn name is your vpn connection name.

After that run:

Get-VpnConnection -Name “vpn name”

and check if SplitTunneling is ok set:

SplitTunneling : True

I did what you said, and now i have internet on my laptop, when connected to VPN, but i can’t use programs that require VPN connection. WinBox also not connecting. If i revert back to False, then everything works, except the internet.

Check if the subnet used in the office is the same as the one used at home. Many people use 192.168.1.0/24 both at home and in small business networks.
If the subnet is the same, you will not be able to access the resources of the two networks at the same time.
