watchdog ip? which one?

i have setup some mikrotik (RB951Ui-2HnD) in various places with watchdog enable so they reboot if they crash.
the thing is i see many times reboot in the log file from watchdog.
"memory system, error, critical system rebooted because of ping watchdog timeout. (ROS 6.15)
i dont know if the ip i have set is ok.
Would it be wise to set the IP for it to watch as its own? When the board locks up is it still able to ping itself or not?
what ip you use for watchdog?

No, own IP is not a good idea. This is to ping your gateway, or for example google (8.8.8.:sunglasses:

i dont know why but before 1 month i have set my own mikrotik to watchdog 8.8.8.8 and getting many restarts without reason.

Not without reason, but because IP 8.8.8.8 was not reachable. Maybe your internet connection is not reliable. Don’t use Watchdog in this case.

thanx. yes you are right about “without reason.”
i will try again google dns 8.8.8.8 to some customers and see how its going!

If you want to do restart when ip address is not accessible then I would use to check the closest neighbours instead an ip in the Internet. But the question is if restart is appropriate reaction in this case. Why you made such setting?

who is the closest neighbours? what do you mean by that?

we are talking about a router in an apartment of 10 houses.
if router crash everyone will start calling and say" we dont have internet and things like that"
thats why i install mikrotik and trashed thomson. also for blocking torrents, remote login and things like that.

i want the router auto reboot if its halted so i dont have to go to the site to reboot it by myself .

Router os reboots itself when it encounter with some fatal error. No need for ip watchdog. I can imagine that you could have ip watchdog for wireless link when normal switch radio off and on does not help. So this is what I mean by closest neighbour: Opposite side of the link or your nexthop on the way to the Internet. If you don’t have such particular ip address you want to check then just remove the old ip address from watchdog.
