Anyone ever tried putting RouterOS on Watchguard Firebox hardware? Their X700 specifically.

RouterOS is running fine on RouterBOARDs, http://www.routerboard.com
I have several routerboards and numerous x86 systems in service. I’ve now inherited about 40 Watchguard Firebox and wondered if anyone had tried to make RouterOS run on them; before I open one up and void the warranty.
Well I broke down and popped the top on one of them.
It has a removable 256MB flash. I pulled it and installed another that I’d put v3rc5 on with Netinstall.
After a few minutes and some beeping; I now have a MikroTik device with 6- 10/100 ethernet interfaces. (Watchguard charges to install the additional interfaces)
I think I can also use the LCD; it looks like it may be parallel. Just need to figure out the size.
There’s also a SafeXcel 1141 encryption device installed in what looks like a mini-pci slot.
Very cool…thanks for sharing this ![]()
Any chance you can post the output from “/system resource print” and maybe IRQ and IO info?

So far no luck with the LCD. Just flicker and garbage on the screen.
It’s a 20x2, SDEC LMC-SS2A20.
And here's the PCI info:

I looked up the SafeXcel 1141 card, it looks very interesting:
http://www.safenet-inc.com/products/chips/safeXcel1141.asp
So it looks like the specs of a Firebox X700 are:
Intel PIII 1.2Ghz
256MB PC133 RAM
256MB CF Card
CF adapter on-board
6 - Realtek RTL8139 10/100 Ethernet
Not a bad router/firewall.
They certainly didn’t skimp on hardware. After searching for prices on this thing, it appears that these can be had for a reasonable price when compaired to a 1u rack server and already have more “out of the box” features (CF and the 6 10/100 ports mainly).
I don’t know much on the LCD side, although maybe some others here can help (or maybe MikroTik can add a new driver?). Thanks again for sharing the info.
I know you have a bunch of these, but also keep in mind of the Link Tech, PoweRouter 732.
http://www.mikrotikrouter.com is the website just in case.
These units run Dual Core P4 3.0 gig Processors, 512meg DDR2 Ram (upgradable), 64meg Compact Flash Card, and 7 Intel Pro 1000 Ethernet Ports on the Front. Several USBs as well as a PCI Slot, and a mPCI slot.
We have been using these for a bit of everything, but recently, we dropped in R52Hs in them, and are doing 18 mile backhauls using Dual N-Stream. On the bench, using the MT testing software we got a stable 35 mbit accross full duplex, so 70 meg total with Dual N-Stream link. Thats with -63s on both ends.

Need an Enterprise-Grade RouterOS
http://www.mikrotikrouter.com
We’ve been building core routers and firewalls out of Dell PowerEdge 860’s. We install up to two dual quad gig cards; giving us a total of total of 10 Gig Interfaces if needed. We use them because of the gold or silver onsite 4hr support. The last set were dual-core 2.6Ghz with 2GB RAM. I can’t tell you exactly how much; but we get them for well under the list on the PowerRouter. We use Addonics SATA-CF adapters that go in the CD-Rom bay.
We’re interested in converting the Firebox because we have so many in the field. I don’t think we’d actually buy these to make firewalls.
Hi,
I found a FireBox Edge X5 can somebody tell me if i can install Mikrotik in this device. The device lacks a CF-Card so i cannot install tru cf cards
After a few minutes and some beeping; I now have a MikroTik device with 6- 10/100 ethernet interfaces. (Watchguard charges to install the additional interfaces)
I know this is a 10 year old thread, but I found it while googling, and I want to leave a few crumbs for the next person looking into this so.
I just installed RouterOS on a WatchGuard Firebox x1250e and wrote a blog entry about it.
It was easy, all I had to do was install to a cf card inside an old laptop using netinstall and purchased a license! Whooo Hoo!
Impressive… I am looking forward the next parts and performance results compared to the power consumption…
Just installed 6.43.4 into a X700 64MB CompactFlash and enabled LCD
Nothing easier… for an old unused HW
X700 comes with a miniPCI slot equipped with an AV-SFB160 VPN accelerator card , once replaced with a Routerboard R52 found on my toolbox, it was immediately recognized and running …
Works flawlessy
An XTM-510 would worth a try…
OKNET
Can you please post the steps to do that?
I have an x750E and i want to install routeros on it
