WDS connect issue with AtherosChipset but ok with Ubnt

Dear All,

This is an old question, MT WDS is not compatible with other brands though they use the same chipset.
But I found it’s compatible with Ubiquiti devices. So i captured the packets from the air and found the differences:

  1. MT have private vendor specific IE in its beacon and some other managment packets.
  2. Ubiquiti also have this vendor IE in the interactive packets.
  3. Without this vendor IE, the wds link can’t create successful.
  4. The vendor IE include some private info, the RouterOS version num(ubnt has 2.9.31 different from MT 5.20 in my RB951_2n) and radio decription.

The question is:

  1. Are these MT vendor IE define opened for other client?
  2. Dose Ubiquiti have the agreement with MT and allow to use the private protocol?
  3. Can we find these definition or contact with MT for support?

Thanks.

As far as I know there is no any universal standard for WDS (set of rules that is recommended for each vendor).
That’s why there is no too much compatibility for WDS between different vendors, when it works (you are lucky). For big wireless network with WDS environment, you should use one vendor devices.

From Atheros support, most vendors who uesd atheros chipset, use the same wds mechanism.
So the key point : Dose the vendor ie added by MT opened for others?

Why don’t you ask ubiquity?
