Can you remove a WDS interface from a bridge, the one that the AP is on, etc. Put a /30 on the WDS interfaces, and then put a /24 on the AP that the WDS is running on to do routing? I know this is not 100% perfect, but can you do it?

WDS and routing are two completely different animals…
I answered the question myself by doing it.
Try this.
node one – AP with WDS interface going to node2
node two - Ap with wds interface goign to node1
If you want, you can pull the WDS (static only) intefaces out of the bridge
then plop a /30 on the two WDS interfaces,
then assign differant subnets to the wlan1 interface on each of the APs.
As long as you put your routes in or use a routing protocol, it will route though the WDS interface, just like it if was a backhaul link ..
of course, you get ALLL of the negitives with WDS, but you DON"T have to run it bridged, you can ROUTE accross the WDS.
Scarry, but it DOES work. I have about 13 nodes doing this now!
is it the right way, HELL NO! lol but it is working until we can get some more radio cards in these boxes.

Sounds risky, like one of those “fixes” that one day stops working for no apparent reason and you spend half the night driving from tower to tower. Good luck!
We are converting it all away from WDS, this was the instant fix so far. I HATE WDS with a passion, hate hate hate, but, for now, we have done quite a bit to remove issues. So far it is working, but by next week, there will not be any WDS in the network. It is also a small 13 node network over a 1/2 sq mile. All hotspots.
