WDS Setup Guide?

I cannot seem to find any information on setting up WDS on 2 units. Can someone point me to the right wikki or to a page that explains it?

I want to use 2 rb500 units with 1 radio each to run a hotspot at an apartment complex. I need one unit to be the “master” AP and run the hotspot software. I need the second unit to connect via WDS to the main unit and do nothing more than increase the network coverage area so clients can auth to the main unit.

I have the units setup and WDS connecting. I can MAC ping the second unit from the first and vice versa. When I walk around and roam to the second unit, it acts like there is no traffic being passed over the WDS connection. I am missing something, but I can’t figure out what.

I would really like to read up on how it is supposed to work, but I can’t seem to find any info in this. Any help is mucho apreciated.

Thanks!

There isn’t a Wiki page specifically for two nodes, but this link is a more complex scenario that you should be able to interpret.

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Wireless_repeater

Just watch out for the MAC addresses they quote, where addresses of the form 00:00:00:00:00:0x are quoted, substitute the real MAC address of the wireless card at the other side of the link.

site,

what you want to setup is not very easy for a new Mikrotik user. You need to attend a mum or do alot or reading or go to a tranning session.

a p2p wds link IS very easy to setup on MT, but if you are having isssues with that, hotspot will be quite difficult and frankly over your head right now.

do some reading and ask us a specific question and you will start to see the light…

or pay some consultant or someone here to do it remotly..

eitherway this is not something you will have running quckly and smoothliy with out some practice

Thanks for the info so far..

Keep in mind that I’m trying this with 2 units that are 200ft. apart with 1 radio each.

The WDS link is active. I have the units locked at -40dBm with dynamic WDS. It is solid and I can mac telnet to the secondary unit from the primary and vice versa. The primary AP is running great with the hotspot software. I have added users and they can get to the internet just fine after authenticating. The problem is with the secondary unit settings and WDS.

What is confusing me is the acutal settings on the secondary unit.

I can see the secondary unit is registering clients, it just isn’t passing any data over WDS to the primary unit. When connected via the secondary unit, I cannot get DHCP and when I static IP the client, it cannot see the primary AP over the WDS link. If I walk over to where the primary AP is at, I can get DHCP, authenticate, and get internet access.

The direct questions are:
Do I need to add an access rule or something to get the secondary unit to register clients and just pass the data over the WDS link to the primary unit?
Do i need to add an IP address to the secondary unit bridge interface or wlan1 interface?
Do I need to set a SSID on the secondary unit since all it is doing is extending the range of the primary AP?
Do I need to set the secondary unit as “wds-slave” or should it be something else.

Thanks!!
