What is 'Pauses' in statistics?

I have more than 100,000 pauses events, what does it mean? 100% CPU load in 250GS?
Could it be responsible for variable ping times under heavy load?

I read in a post, “try disabling ‘Flow Control’”
But, if I disable the ‘Flow Control’, what are the implications?

Last time I was having pausees on my router it was the customer firewall that was messing up. Try disconnecting devices that are behind equipment on that port. Pauses can be passed over some layer 2 devices but they won’t cross a layer three device. The situation I had was a rb1100 that was attached to a WiMAX ap. A customer firewall behind the subscriber radio was the cause.

A pause comes from a device asking another to slow down.
