what is the future of WISP with the increased bandwidth being offered by fibre optic cables as these can accomodated online TV etc. Or we wisp should concentrate on the rural/remote areas.
This question or one like it has been asked every year for the past 12 years that we have been an ISP. The answer is that you keep an open mind, stay alert, keep up your education, and adapt.
A great strength of wireless (especially with Mikrotik) is low cost quick deployment of infrastructure. You can’t do that with fiber nor copper. It is pretty obvious that Rural broadband is a natural for wireless. In these difficult times in our economy, we might see FTTH deployments slow down. Once the fiber infrastructure is in place, it will be difficult to compete unless the ILEC supporting the fiber does a poor job.
Technology does continue to evolve though, so maybe we will see something reasonable come out that is faster than the current 802.11a,b,g 54Mbps per 20MHz wireless standard.

The question should be asked every month in this forum. I think MT doesn’t do enough to keep up with the future. We need:
- better spectrum efficiency
- better adaption to national regulations
So here in ETSI we still cant use 5,8GHz. We do not nead another Board with Gbit ports. We need an increase in wireless performance and usable spectrum to keep up with the future.
