I am looking for a way to improve my home network set up. Currently I’m using Virgin Superhub 2ac, which is quite disappointing despite all internet reviews. The internet package I have is 200Mbps VIVID (which virgin successfully delivers at 120-160Mbps)
I was wondering about set up of Mikrotik RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN + UniFi AP AC LR. Would that be adequate combination for a house?
I’d say the HEX seems a good fit - especially if you’re not going to need the router to have any wireless interfaces.
I’ve been happy with my 2011 for years. I think it could handle a 200M connection if you’re using fasttrack but this platform is not going to grow with your Internet connection when higher speeds become available.
The 3011 is the newer version of the 2011 but it’s still got growing pains, being the first ARM-architecture routerboard. I’m probably going to upgrade to one of these once the platform becomes more stable.
If I had to do it today, I’d go with the HEX or the 850Gx2
But would Hex rival say Netgear Nighthawk in performance? Ram and CPU frequencies are a bit lower. I’m trying to make a system that would be just as powerful as mainstream router, would cost the same, but be more reliable.
Btw is the PoE out port on 2011 only functioning when PoE is also supplied to the router?
When evaluating the performance of the various Mikrotik platforms, I look at the full firewall routing performance, and in general you can expect the mid-sized packet performance to be roughly what you’ll see in production (real traffic is usually a mix of full-mtu traffic and small packets).
The 850Gx2 is going to give much more performance than the 2011 is. The HEX looks to be about the same or a bit better performance than the 2011 according to the full-firewall row - interesting what a performance hit the 2011 seems to take when using firewall rules vs. queueus or fastpath.
I think the 2011 requires PoE in to give PoE out but don’t quote me on that - mine is the original model that doesn’t do PoE, and even if it did, I don’t have any PoE devices that I would need to power from it, so the feature would be unused/untested anyway at my house…
Mikrotik is quite difficult to source in UK . So no 850Gx2 for me. But it seems that hEX can do “NAT at roughly 200Mbps” which is sufficient for me. Don’t even know if I need NAT yet.
PoE in my case is needed for UniFi AP AC, but apparently it supplies a proprietary injector to do the job.
Netgear will have to try real hard to get me back. At the very least I was thinking of ASUS, but now that I’ve placed order for hEX + UAP none of it matters.
I’ve checked out LinITX. The range is a lot wider that BroadBandBuyer where I’ve made order, shame they didn’t come up on google.
