What size DOM / Disk On Module to purchase?

Im in the process of building up a via epia based system to use as a firewall/router. Im sick to death of my neatgear so I have put together enough spare parts to build a 2 nic system as a replacement. The only parts I want to change out are the 4gig HD and the 2nd nic.

The HD I plan on replacing with a DOM and the 2nd nic with a dual NIC which would give me 3 NICs and a silent drive.

So I really have 2 questions.

  1. Whats the smallest size DOM I can puchase.
  2. Any recommendations for a dual PCI based NIC?

Peace

64 Mb should be enough to run RouterOS without any problem (except proxy feature).

I was hoping the answer would be something like that. The smallest cheap DOM I could find was actually on ebay for a 512MB, which is good enough and since I wont be caching anything I should be in great shape.

Thanks

Could always use the 4Gb hdd as a cache drive - it’s not like its good for much else anyway.

Hehe …
You haven’t listened to that drive run, every access to the drive sounds like a heard of elephants stampeding though the case

With the motherboard in use being fanless and switching over to the DOM I’m even thinking about just un-plugging the fan in the case, but so far its as advertised - quiet

So if your looking for small footprint case for a project, I think you have a hard time beating it.

I have used a Dane Elec 512MB CF drive for some time. But the drive became unreadable do to some unknown reason. So i changed back to my 6 GB Harddrive

In the meantime i found out that the cartonboard i used to place the cf flash ide converter on got a litte wet So the CF was shorted out.

But am using little diskspace:

Im currently running the free edition of MT and its running as a NAT Router with VPN en firewall on a Compaq EN SFF Celeron 466 with 128MB RAM

I thought about a CF, but the adapter I have wouldnt work in the case. So it was cheaper/easier to just order a DOM.

Im using a via epia based board with a 800mhz processor on it, Im trying to scrounge up enough ram to run it at 512mb but right now its at 256mb. Yeah its a bit of overkill but thats what spare parts are like in my house

Ill be giving the hardware a final workout this weekend and hopefully have the router up in going late sunday or monday.

Peace
