What wireless mikrotick router to use in classroom?

Hi All,

Firstly thanks very much for any help that you may be able to offer

I need some help deciding which the best MikroTik wireless router to use.

I need to setup a wireless access point in a classroom. About 30 students will be using it at the same time to with Tablets and Netbooks.

The router will be connected to a 2mb LAN.

We will be often watching youtube videos so router will also need to have a large caching proxy.

My hope is that I can view the youtube videos first, and then the rest of the class can view them from the cache.

Also I will need ability to whitelist & blacklist websites.

From what I read I’m pretty sure that I can do all this with one of the MicroTik wireless access points by attaching an external USB hard disk and using RouterOS correctly.

My question: Which would be the best wireless mikrotik router that can handle 30 students, in the same room, streaming the same youtube video to all students, from the cache, at the same time?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The best way I’ve found to handle that is a separate proxy server.

You can configure the RB to go through the proxy. Several free Linux proxy servers out there, ClearOS is quick and easy to configure.

I’d probably go with a RB711-2A HnD.

Is there a good version that is a ready made box that I can just plugin?

Such as: http://routerboard.com/RB2011UAS-IN

I was hoping to avoid building hardware.

Also, is this the one you mean? http://routerboard.com/product/120

The 2011 will probably do fine. I have used the 711 myself before, so I would rather recommend from working experience.

That being said, MT usually gets it sorted even if it might be a little flakey to begin with. I haven’t heard anything bad about the 2011 and I’ve been planning on getting one for my home AP whenever I had a little extra money.

I would absolutely still use a separate proxy, even a cheap PC would work great.

Do you think that it is realistic to be able to handle streaming youtube from a cache to 30 students via MT tech such as 711/2011?

(I was reading on another thread that other brands were recommended for high density environments)
