I trying to limit upload and download speed on the one port of the switch.
Setting “Bandwidth Limit” both rates (Ingress and Egress) to 3000k on respective port, and measuring speed with http://www.speedtest.net. On the download, all is fine, exactly 3Mbps. Upload speed is very erratic, fluctuating and having at least 3 times less than 3Mbps, mostly even 10-50 times less (for example 0.11Mbps). FTP transfer giving same results.
What I am doing wrong or is it a some weird feature?
PS: Switch seems to be so busy during the upload test, that it does not respond to pings requests at this time.
SwOS will simply drop everything that exceed bandwidth limit on ingress port significantly decreasing TCP speed. It is recommend to limit speed on egress ports.
well, that make sense, but ingress limiting is more or less useless on that way. Unfortunately, separate egress limits for different ingress ports is not possible. I was hoping more intelligent approach from the SwOS. Already replaced all these units with RB750’s and they works fine.
Same issue here (RB250GS port ingress bandwidth limit is very rough), and broadcast storm limit (optionally set to include unicast) is in the wrong direction too (egress, when it would be better to work on ingress).
I’d like to connect a few customers in a building to a common radio on the roof, and protect that radio from one customer gone mad (their router sending lots of small packets per second) without affecting other customers (as limiting on the upstream port or on the radio itself would). I’m concerned only with upload traffic, as download is shaped on the other end (as close to the upstream ISP as possible).
Would a RB750 (configured as a bridge between ports) work better? Which RouterOS version should be best (performance and stability in simple bridge with filtering and port ingress bandwidth limiting, no routing or anything more advanced, no wireless) for this: 3.30, 4.16, 5.0rc7, doesn’t matter?
