Which hardware to pick?

Hi guys

I am completely new to MikroTik products, so I need a bit of help figuring out the best setup for my home.
I have a Gbit fiber connection at home, and my ISP has sent me a ZyXEL VMG3926-B: http://www.zyxel.com/products_services/vmg3926_b_series.shtml

It works most of the time, and I can almost max out my 1GBit connection. However the WiFi does not seem to work as good as my Apple Airport Extreme, so I have currently disabled the WiFi in the ZyXEL router and attached the Apple Airport Extreme (AAE) as an access point. This setup works well, until it doesn’t. I have to reboot the ZyXEL router once a week or so, because it suddenly stops working. I got a bit tired of doing that, so I am currently considering replacing the router with another brand - like MikroTik, in the hope that it will be more stable.

However, I need a router that supports VLAN tagging, as it has to use VLAN 101. My situation is very similar to this: http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/simple-vlan-tagging/49711/1

So I have considered multiple options:

  1. Replace both ZyXEL and AAE with a MikroTik hAP ac (I think it should support VLAN tagging?) https://routerboard.com/RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT
  2. Replace ZyXEL with a MikroTik hEX (I think it should support VLAN tagging?) https://routerboard.com/RB750Gr2
  3. Replace ZyXEL with a MikroTik RB260GS https://routerboard.com/RB260GS
  4. Something else?

I would like a box with powerfull wireless capabilities, and routing built in - so I can replace both of my current devices with a single device. That is why I have been reading about the hAP ac, however from other threads in this forum it sounds like it will be too slow for my 1Gbit connection.

An alternative solution would be another box to use as a router, and then still use my AAE as access point - or a switch that can add and strip the VLAN 101 tags instead of my AAE.

Is the hEX or RB260GS fast enough?
Is there another box I should be looking at? - it does not have to be from MikroTik.

Thanks a lot in advance!

All mikrotik devices supports VLANs.

How does the zyxel router get your public IP, via DHCP, or PPPoE?

RB260 is a switch.
Hex is undersized for 1GBps.

Take some ccr (1009 is enough) as router and keep your actual Ap.

It gets its public IP via DHCP

A 9 core router sounds like overkill, but I might be wrong. Would the RB3011UiAS-RM do the job you think? - or is that not powerfull enough?

Thanks again

Probably yes. Using the fasttrack definitely. But when you start to use queues and queue trees… I think it will not handle full gigabit with ease. But depends on configuration you will set.

Ok, thanks a lot!

spewu, if uses DHCP then the load on the routerboard will be less than PPPoE.

A 3011 would be the absolute minimum I would pick. if it were for me, I’d use a 1100AHx2. A CCR1009 may be overkill but is an investment that will last for lots of years and you will have future speed increases covered.

Ok, very good information - thanks a lot!

RB3011 and CCR1009 with PC suffix have advantage over RB1100AHx2 - fan less design.
It can be good for home use and not only.
