Hello everyone,
it’s a pleasure to be member fo this forum. I hope to get some help from you and based on your vast knowledge and experience, in regards to the following question:
We are starting a pilot ISP project and we are starting with GPON. I am looking for Mikrotik to support the following setup with GPON, using Mikrotik for routing and traffic management.
ZTE C320 OLT is the “access point”, connected to Mikrotik as the only uplink. OLT will be set up as DHCP relay, with Mikrotik serving as DHCP server. It may be necessary to use several IP pools. All IPs will be local network private IPs, no public IPs (at this moment).
On Mikrotik, I want to set up rate limits (carrier uplinks one rate, local network another=higher rate), bursts, IP assignment, I want to set up routing rules (e.g. Netflix and Youtube over connection 1, the rest of traffic over connection 2), traffic queues, I would want to set up HTTP proxy (initially) with remote datacenter for HTTP/HTTPS traffic, and later on set up WAN bonding of 2+ connections with the same datacenter (using 2 Mikrotik routers on 2 WAN ends).
Equipment that will be connected to Mikrotik:
1x ZTE C320 OLT
1x Local stream server (VOD access) (later on posisbly a cluster)
1-10x Uplink CPE from carrier (router/switch type FO equipment)
My envisioned setup is
100 users - 2x 100 MBPS connections, 1x direct + 1x proxy to DC
200 users - 3x 100 MBPS connections, 2x direct with RR load balance + 1x proxy to DC
300 users - 4x 100 MBPS connections, 2x direct with RR load balance + 2x bonding to DC
400 users - 5x 100 MBPS connections, 3x direct with RR load balance + 2x bonding to DC
500 users - 6x 100 MBPS connections, 3x direct with RR load balance + 3x bonding to DC
700 users - 8x 100 MBPS connections, 5x direct with RR load balance + 3x bonding to DC
1000 users - 10x 100 MBPS connections, 6x direct with RR load balance + 4x bonding to DC
1500 users - 1x 1 GBPS connection + 5x 100 MBPS connection, GBPS direct + 5x bonding to DC on 100 MBPS lines
Each user is basically one account, one ONT/ONU working as CPE, which may have multiple devices connected to it on customer’s premises.
This is the number of authenticated and authorized users / assigned IP addresses to ONUs/ONTs.
For sake of stress, let’s assume 40% of them as concurrent at any given point of time during peak time (as concurrent = routing packets at the same time).
Most will be HTTP and streaming, social media, mail, whatsapp, skype etc., P2P planned to be reduced to crawl.
For rate limiting: Initially I plan to offer 6 mbps and 12 mbps plans for Internet traffic (using OLT VLANs), 30 mbps local network traffic (which will provide access to IPTV and VOD).
For Burst: set up burst rules (e.g. burst to +50% for up to 60 seconds if no congestion, etc.)
Traffic Queues and Traffic Shaping - for better traffic management (what exactly would need to be set up I don’t know yet).
For Proxy: Proxy HTTP/S traffic via a datacenter
Routing rules: Routing rules, such as subnets for Youtube, Netflix, Akamai, Google, and certain classes oF IP addresses to be routed directly, the rest to be routed via HTTPS proxy
I would have a contractor set up and configure Mikrotik router and proxy for me.
My question is: let’s assume start up phase, 100 authenticated users (40 concurrent), 500 users (200 concurrent), 1000 users (400 concurrent) and 1500 users (600 concurrent). Which Mikrotik router to use at each stage?
I was looking at RB4011, as it has the same CPU/memory as RB1100AHx4. I have also reviewed CCR1009. I like RB4011 as it has 10G port, and the ZTE OLT has 10G uplink port as well.
Now my question is, will RB4011 be OK for me to service let’s say 500 users (200 concurrent)? I know it’s been seen only on paper, but I read it has a new generation powerful processor and the CPU might be better than the one at CCR1009. What about 1000 and 1500 authenticated user level (40% concurrent)? I read on this forum that at 1500 users (not sure if it was authenticated or concurrent) I would need two CCRs working together.
Can you give me suggestions on which router to get based on what I listed above? Thank you very much.
