Which router board to use

I manage a network of about 150 users and still growing. We have been using RB192 for more than four years now. It has started to fail. We have to restart it at least once everyday so we are planning on buying another one.

I need suggestions on which RB will best suit our environment. These are some of our considerations:

  1. VPN capability
  2. Higher processor speed and RAM (RB192 runs at 300MHz with 32MB RAM)
  3. Enough space for web cache
  4. Support for VLAN and Wireless
  5. etc

Thanks in advance for your recommendations

The 493AH or 493G is pretty much the same board you had with higher processor and RAM. You might also be interested in the new 2011 series.

@cbrown
thanks for your response. I will actually prefer something significantly better than what we have now. I will lokk at the ones you proposed.

    • how many tunnels, what bandwidth (small/large packets?), which encryption/chiper combo?
    • how much space? consider using mikrotik proxy with parent proxy set to a linux box - much more flexible setup and much more space for web cache.

recomendations:

rb2011uas-2hdin if your are on the budget - still quite considerable upgrade to rb192 you are using now
rb493g - if you need 9 gbit ports and/or multiple wlan cards (2.4/5 GHZ)
rb1100ah if you need a realy strong cpu and more ram - you will need to add wireles seperately
rb1100ahx2 if you need hardware ipsec acceleration and more cpu power than rb1100ah - you will need to add wireles seperately

I do not consider cloudcore router as a solution for production enviroment since routeros6 is not yet finished and many of features that would benefit from multicore operations are not yet implemented/tested/bug free also no hardware ipsec acceleration for now - will be in the future (when?). Might take another year at this tempo before ccr it is ready. And also you will need to add wireless seperately (rb711ua-2hnd, rb711g-5hnd, rb435g+wlan cards, …)

rb1200 has problems with ipsec - additional latency for no reason - may or may not get fixed some day. Look at this thread:
http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/rb1200-ipsec-latency/62831/1 - also need to add wireless seperately.
