While Web Proxy gets fixed, what can I use?

Hi, I have a RouterOS 3.9 on x86 HotSpot running with around 50 active users most of the time. As we were experiencing problems (PC hunged once a day), I was told by a Mikrotik guru to stop using web proxy. That fixed it… but, I need a web proxy!!!
As I just “don’t do” Linux (please don’t hate me for that!), I don’t have a clue of what to do…
A friend suggested me to look at some packed distros, for complete idiots like myself:

Sme Server
http://wiki.contribs.org/Main_Page
http://www.smeserver.org/

E Box
Web Site http://ebox-platform.com/

Untangle
Web Site http://www.untangle.com/

I’m sure I’m not the only one with this problem, and I think we all would appreciate to know best practices on this…
It would be great if I didn’t have to use a second PC!
Would some one pliiiiiiiizzzzzz suggest me the EASIEST & LEAST EXPENSIVE solution?

Thanks in advance!

Is squid for Windows a reasonable option?
Remember, I have most of the time 50 users browsing the web, using 2Mbps from my backbone…

I assume you’re looking for a freebie?

If so then SME is great, although free is an absolute term because similar to Mikrotik they rely on the forums for support, so your contributions are encouraged.

Anyway, there’s also the option of DansGuardian content filter for SME if that’s any use for your customers.

Hope this helps.

Hi Hilton!
Yes, your assumption is correct! Freeware is welcomed…

So, SME server seems to be te right option. I guess I’ll have to use a second computer for web proxy. Hope Mikrotik fixes web proxy in routerOS 3.x soon!!!

Thanks for your help!

There is also Squid for windows…

Thanks, lastguru!
Yes, I’ve already mentioned it (see my second post)
Do you think it’ll work? I’ll try it then!

Chofex

I did use the windows version, its good but most of the add on appz would not work as they are manly used for Linux etc, but i had not problems with it. 2.6 stable version.

Now installed ububtu and setting used to working on Linux… not easy for me as i have always used Windows.

If you cant find the windows version let me know and i will post it to you.

Thanks rednetwifi!
I installed ipcop… that’ll do.

Chofex

I did install IPCOP, it works very well, and was very easy to get it running too.
The only thing that bothers is having to use 2 computers instead of one, but it really isn’t that bad, is it?

Hi Chofex can you say me how do you install the IPCop with MK. Do you use one or two interface in IPCop Server?.

Thanks.

Kike

Hi kike!
I answer in English so everybody can understand…

I connecter Internet to a PC running IP-Cop on ether1, from ether2 of that PC I connected to ether1 on Mkt, and from that Mkt ether2 I connect to my Wireless switch.

So everything goes through IPCop.

But after a while I found out that any proxy gives you much extra work, by setting filters to some pages that don’t work if proxied. Sometimes users get angry because they’re proxied… so I just removed it!
No more proxy, no more trouble!

Thanks Chofex for you info.

Un saludo
