Hello. Yes, it was that. I had heard about the 'invisible option Winbox3 bug'.
I then spent the next 30 - 40 minutes looking at the config with /export and trying to remove that, and then spent the next 20 minutes being annoyed at being forced to use Winbox4 (hence my whingy posts about the comment button, and the even bolder red capsman stuff....).
So is Winbox3 just dead and unmaintained now then?

I'd say Winbox3 is already EoL for some time now. Latest winbox3 version is 3.43 ... not sure when it was released, 3.42 was released shortly before May 26th 2025. One can still download 3.43 ... but it's listed under "Legacy Tools" in download page.
IMO EoL can have two meanings: 1.) producer declares it as such and it's de-facto not available to get it from the source any more. And 2.) producer doesn't do any more development, neither for security things nor for functionality (but that version might still be available at source). There are things (such as the realms-raw) which simply can't be set properly using winbox3 ... which is IMO lack of needed functionality ...
In MT world nobody (MT included) is forcing anybody to use any particular version of software. But OTOH one should not complain about lack of features (or perceived bugs) when insisting on using old/EoL/legacy software for any particular reason.

The problem here, in my opinion, isn't that WinBox version 3 adds the interworking.realms-raw="" parameter, but that this parameter "disappears." It's not visible in WinBox v 3.43, Winbox 4.3 or WebFig. Even the latest Rc version doesn't have it.
It's quite easy to check. You can create an empty configuration manually in the WinBox or WebFig and then in the terminal (this is what happens during import).

And this behavior of RoOs is somewhat frightening.

Yes, and that's what happened here. It was a new install, and I took a router, did a "/system reset-configuration", and went from there.
