Wifi extender

Hi,

I found this tutorial on how to connect to ANY (non wds) wireless network and enable all LAN ports to use that connection:

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Connect_to_an_Available_Wireless_Network

However: I need to use the mikrotik temporarily as a “extender” so I need to CONNECT to a wireless AP and let clients connect to the mikrotik again over WiFi.

How can I achieve this? Note: the AP I need to connect to is not under my control (and also a not mikrotik device), all I know is the encryption key

By wds mode or with two separate radios.

Unfortunately I do not control the host AP, I’m not 100% sure but I am 99% positive there is no WDS support.
I once bought a $15 “pen drive sized” accesspoint/extender that could do this so I thought it should be no problem for the Mikrotik.

Well perhaps that cheap extender did had dual radio, thanks for helping!

No. It doesn’t have dual radio but supports universal repeater mode. Mikrotik doesn’t have such mode by design.

Ah, alright thanks, unfortunately I have to look for a different solution.

Sure. But remember that the cheapest solutions are usually on the road to hell. I am also using universal repeater functions where I do not want to invest…

Yes, fortunately it is only a temporary solution

Having an option to make fully working wifi client together with virtual ap on one radio would make me happy. Unfortunately It is not possible with ros and I don’t expect it ever would be.
