Wifi for MikroTik EG25-GKne KNOT Embedded LTE4 Global?

Last week I got the KNOT EG25 to enable a box of esp32 and pi5 do do several functions and coordinate over wifi locally in the box, and use the LTE for internet connectivity to a simple management interface… you know the typical BYO IOT stuff. For it to work the wifi don’t need to reach more than a few meters.

I got the KNOT running with my hologram g3 sim card, after poking around an realizing that the “roaming” option needed to be turned on and was not default.

Anyway, I had been looking at different on line post, they were old, but nonetheless and I was somehow convinced there were a wifi chipset in the KNOT, but trying to set it up doesn’t work and when looking at the box it’s not mentioned, only BT is mentioned…,

So am I missing something? Does it just not have hardware for wifi ? or is there a package I need to install in routerOS to make it work ? or do I need to open it up and and add a wifi card (is that even an option) ? Or do I need to buy a different product ?

I don't know what to tell you. But it doesn't have Wi-Fi, or at least never seen that in the spec sheet for these. The older KNOTs did... which was handy since we have them at several towers for LoRA. where there is no AP, so it's handy.

The other thing is there no USB AFAIK either... you cannot use some USB-to-WiFi thing (I guess outside another ESP32)

I suppose you could open it up. But I doubt there are miniPCI or M.2 connectors, if there was, it's be used by the LTE modem. It's possible there are header pins to solder one yourself, but I'd bet "not".

I don't have know of the new ones, so I cannot check. Although I'm curious if there are USB pads.

AFAICU "KNOT" models have the 2.4 GHz wifi, the "KNOT embedded" don't.

2.4G would be fine. The EG25 is not embedded, just in a case ready for din rail mount, which is why I got it.

Do you have any info on how I go ahead and diagnose how to potentially enable wifi, like is there a package I need to install ?

I expected it was something like that, older models had wifi, but for some reason was removed from newer models. Soldering in a modem is beyond what I would really like to do.

Oh I wouldn't either. Depending on GPIO needs (since that also changed between the new and old KNOTs), but the older KNOT does have IoT-NB support... which is you get the right SIM might be enough on cellular side, but that would be much slower than LTE4 be the tradeoff to exchange for older model (if the Wi-Fi was important).

But it kinda of product miss this does not have Wi-Fi. And other product support 2.4Ghz LoRa now will, so it's kinda mess on what support what... which was kinda of one KNOT features. They have all the right support... it mashed in weird ways in the product line up.

KNOT Embedded LTE4 Global

Now what (the heck) they mean with the “embedded” in the name is IMHO a good question.
