WiFi (over VPN) on vacantion

Hi Guys,

Going on a vacation abroad in a couple of weeks and I want to use my mAP lite as a WiFi router for 2 networks:

  1. just the regular “wired” internet that is available
  2. a network that routes everything over a VPN (/tunnel/whatever)

So: I went to set this up and I’ve created 2 bridges, 2 WiFi networks (2 DHCP etc etc). It all seems to work fine. However it seems that the performance is very limited. For example I tried connecting to these networks:
(mbps)

  • 750/750 → 48/53
  • 40/4 → 0.6/2.5
  • 150/15 → 13/13

I understand that there is some overhead (and when doing 50mbps I see the CPU going to 90%) but why are the other networks so slow? I can confirm these speeds I’ve posted are easy reached from that local network. If my mAP lite can do 50/50 with 90% CPU why is it stuck with 0.6/2.5 over a 40/4 connection?

Or perhaps the PPTP is not suitable for this? I can understand a IP tunnel might perform better but as I don’t know the public IP I cannot really configure that. And when I change from one location to another I would need to reconfigure the new IP correct? Any suggestions?
