Hello,
I’ll be moving in a couple of months, and I’m looking at possible solutions to improve wifi coverage for my next flat.
What I would like to achieve:
- Good wifi (up to 802.11ac) coverage for my new flat, in an old (~1960 era) building, with potentially lots of wifi networks already deployed by “all-in-one” box/CPE from neighbors.
- Unified network across 2 APs would most likely be necessary to cover the entire flat effectively, one at each end rather than a single one in the middle (No easy way to set one up in the middle, anyway).
- Ability to have at least 2 (up to 4 would be great) SSIDs, bridged to 2-4 different VLANs (see below)
- SNMPv2/v3 monitoring
- SSH admin (nice to have, but optional, I’m so used to CLI, a GUI is not appealing to me!)
SSID usage:
- “Main” Wifi (will be used in conjunction with Mikrotik or some other solution to load balance between the 2 different ISP links I already have)
- “ISP1” Wifi (Optional, to be able to “by-pass” the load balancing mechanism, and connect directly through ISP1)
- “ISP2” Wifi (Optional, to be able to “by-pass” the load balancing mechanism, and connect directly through ISP2)
- “Guest” Wifi (Self-explanatory)
I thought of using the Ubiquiti UniFi AP for the job, simple and effective?
According to http://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Frequently-Asked-Questions/UniFi-Do-UniFi-APs-require-the-controller-to-be-running-at-all/ta-p/412413 I should not be forced to have the controller running except during configuration, so I think I can make something work with UniFi.
Is there anything in the Mikrotik range that I can use?
The UniFi AP-AC is way too expensive compared to the AP, but maybe I’m missing some “key feature” that would be so useful it would justify the additional (more that 3 times) cost?
I’ll be using a Mikrotik RB260GSP to connect this AP and the 2 ADSL links and trunk them over different VLANs to a CRS125-24G-1S to do the (light)routing and NAT/FW/VPNs.
Any help/suggestion is welcome on this!
Note: As a side note completly unrelated, if you know of any tiny/small ADSL over POTS Annex A and/or M modem (and just modem!) I’m open to suggestions… I found the Draytek Vigor 120v2, but it’s still bigger than I would like it to be, not much room in the closet where I need to put 2 modems and the RB260GSP.
Sylvain.
