Winbox on OS X 10.11 El Capitan - it's a way to fix it the easy way

UPDATE: Do NOT follow this tutorial, unless you have to. See @normis post: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=100956#p502563

Hello!
Since final version of El Capitan arrived Mac users probably noticed that Winbox version will not run anymore, instead showing following error:

The application X11 could not be opened.
An error occurred while starting the X11 server: "Failed to activate core devices."
Click Quit to quit X11. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.

There are two solutions - disabling “rootless” feature (which is NOT recommended) or simply configuring Wineskin wrapper bundled with Winbox.
First you have to install XQuartz, next right click “Winbox3” application inside Applications folder, select “Show Package Contents” and than double click “Wineskin” icon inside it.

Next click “Advanced” button and go to “Options” tab. Just select last options to use XQuartz instead of builit-in Wine X11.

Close all windows and you’re done - you can now run Winbox like before without compromising security of OS X

Actually, if you use Winebox, you don’t need X11 at all. You can run it natively quite nicely.

Where we can find it?

Sorry, Winebottler…

Thanks.
With Wine I have no problem, but if I try to make the all in one package with Winebottler it gets stuck on the creation process.

I’ll post a download link with my code signed WinBox app. Give me a bit to get it uploaded to my sever.

Give this a try:

You will still need Wine.app installed (from here: http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/downloads)

https://www.intrustech.com/WinBox.7z

That should get you a stable, and Code Signed WinBox, that will also update correctly via the Check For Updates menu item. No X11 needed.

Thanks @IntrusDave. Works great.

chris.

Thanks

works great!

Im on latest El Capitan and downloaded your 7z file, moved the Winbox thing to Application.
Opened it and still no success!
It shows nothing or doesnt open anything, neither any error.

What to do ?

Did you install the Wine.app too?

No, only your 7z file.

You still need the Wine.app to run it. You can get it here:
http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/downloads

So download Wine and then first open Wine and then double click your Winbox.app ?

No, once you have Wine.app installed (copied to the Applications folder) that is all you need. Just Open Winbox.app and you are good to go.

New Winebottler has fix for El Capitan. You can download the new pre-compiled Winbox here:

@normis: Something is wrong with new Winbox on El Capitan - while running it f.lux is disabled and reenabled.

Thanks.
Downloading now.
Lets see

Sorry none of our Macs have this. I don’t know what causes it. Maybe you use a different display color profile, and Wine uses a different default?
