As we start to upgrade our entire network to use more and more RouterBoards here at my ISP, I have come across a few issues and desired features for WinBox.
1.) In our netbook PCs we use out in the field, WinBox will not display the menus properly on the 800x480 screen. The menu entries at the bottom just go below the screen and are unclickable. We have to change the resolution each time we want to use entries at the bottom of the menu so we can scroll the screen down. Take a page out of Microsoft’s book and make the WinBox menus behave like the Start menu when it gets full. e.g. It will scroll when the mouse reaches the bottom of the menu, or it will make a new column to the right for menu entries that would otherwise go off the screen.
2.) I would like to be able to make a list of ports and their associated service names to display in Torch (and other parts of WinBox). While viewing traffic in Torch some ports have the service name displayed in parentheses. e.g. 80 (http). It would be nice if we could have a custom port list that we could create that would allow us to do something like add port 3724 and call it WOW which would then be displayed in Torch like it does with common ports. I have lots of ports and their associated service names memorized, but I find myself looking up ones I have looked up before. A feature such as this would help save time.
3.) Have some way to better organize large Address Lists in the Firewall. A tree view may be good. It could have a plus sign to the left of the first line of every unique entry which would hide or collapse the entries of the same name that are below it. e.g. Say you had 500 entries titled “BLACKLIST” and you didn’t want to have to scroll through those to get to other entries every time you opened your Address List. If there was a plus sign to the left of the first “BLACKLIST” entry then you could collapse all of those lines into one line just called “BLACKLIST”. Another way to do the same thing may be tabs. For each entry in the Address List that has the same name it could have its own tab below the toolbar. In my example there could be a tab called “BLACKLIST” that when clicked on would display the 500 entries by themselves. Also, something to consider may be the have a preference that says only make a tab for entries that have greater than a certain number. Say if you set it to 10 you would have to have at least 10 entries called “BLACKLIST” before it made its own tab for them. This would only allow the largest groups to have tabs and would prevent too many tabs from forming.
4.) In Torch, Firewall Filter Rules etc. it would be nice to drag columns around like in every other application to group together data that you are trying to compare.
Thanks for listening to my suggestions! Your doing a great job guys! Keep it up!
